East Gippsland Brass

East Gippsland Brass has been in existence since the early 1870s. It started as "Redenbach’s German Brass Band" and, over the past 140 years, has undergone several name changes including "Bairnsdale Municipal Band" and "Bairnsdale Citizens’ Band" before deciding on the more all-encompassing "East Gippsland Brass".

The Band made its first foray on the Jazz scene by performing at the Merimbula Jazz Festival several years ago. Since then we have continued with a swinging, sometimes funky "Big Band" feel, incorporating the sound of heavy Brass and foot tapping jazzy arrangements. This is a very big "Big Band" with occasionally over 45 players! That’s a lot of Jazz.

The Band is made up of players of brass instruments from the local community from as far away as Paynesville, Bruthen, Lakes Entrance and Nowa Nowa. Apart from the jazz we play at Festivals like the Paynesville Music Festival and at Merimbula, the Band also plays traditional Brass music at concerts and parades such as at Anzac Day and Carols by Candlelight. Two years ago "East Gippsland Brass" competed in the Australian Brass Band Championships in Melbourne and attained 4th place from all "D Grade" Brass bands in Australia.

The Band has been conducted by Kees Dogger for the past 20 years or so and is going from strength to strength. New members on all Brass musical instruments are welcome any time to come play quality (and fun!) brass music at Picnic Point Hall on Thursday nights from 7.00 to 9.00.
